Menorca is the most tranquil and family orientated island of the Balearics and with 315 days of sunshine per year, is the perfect holiday destination for all the family. Whilst it is slightly cooler in climate, it is the first place in Spain to see the beautiful sunrise.

The ideal setting for those that aren't particularly active to get out and about with some fantastic and easy walking, cycling and riding routes. You'll encounter some interesting stone monuments en-route, which date back thousands of years and prove to be excellent markers for hiking through the countryside and linking up the coastal coves. These aren't the only prehistoric monuments on the island, the most characteristic images of Menorca are the rock formations, known as Taulas. Two of the most well known Taulas are found in the district of Ciutadella, "Torre Trencada". Also be sure to check out the islands most popular caves located in Cala Morell.

Head to Maó or Mahón, Menorca's Capital, famous for its natural 5km harbour, making it the second largest natural harbour in the World, after Pearl Harbour. Admire the views, super yachts and enjoy the authentic cuisine (taste the Formatge de Maó, a cheese typical of the island) and local gin in the Xoriguer Gin Distillery. Whilst you're here be sure to visit the Church of Santa Maria and listen to its 3000 piped organ.

For unforgettable scenery, head up Monte Toro, which at its peak, is 358 metres above sea level, for panoramic views of the island and on a clear day you might be lucky to see as far as Mallorca.

Throughout June - September you'll see the bright and colourful fiesta's take place in Menorca with the locals showing off their equestrian skills! If you haven't had your dose of horses, check out the trotting races in the Aero club and Hippodrome.

The historic town of Ciutadella, on the west coast is also worth a visit with its lovely harbour side cafes, delightful narrow, winding streets and a 14th century Cathedral, which took more than 50 years to build.

A truly unique and picturesque hangout not to be missed is the Cova D'en Xoroi which is a bar hidden amongst a 25 metre high cave set in the cliffs at Cala en Porter. A one off experience to watch the sunset with a cocktail in hand and stay later to party the night away!

Nature lovers will love the island's pine-clad coves, limestone ravines and its wealth of wildlife, which includes eagles, kestrels, kites and even wild tortoises. Sporty visitors can take advantage of the nine-hole golf course, horse riding, and a vast range of water sports. For a spot of relaxation, arguably the best beach of Menorca, is the quiet and secluded Cala Macarelleta in the South, which is well worth a visit.
